A funny thing happened to me on the internet a few days ago, and I just now thought I should tell somebody. I may be the last person to glom onto this threat, but in case I'm not, I'm posting this everywhere I can think of.
We have ZoneAlarm on our computer, and it gives us alerts whenever there's an attempted incursion from somewhere. Sometimes I type in the URL number (it doesn't tell me names, just numbers) to see where the attempt came from. Sometimes it's been communications companies from, of all places, Japan and Korea. Sometimes it's Microsoft. Sometimes it gives me a "site under construction" page. I know there are people out there who use other people's web pages to launch attacks from, so I'm not sure that any of these companies are really responsible.
Anyway, the other day I got an alert, and typed in the number. It gave me a "site under construction" page. Then another window popped up, sort of down to the right and not completely on the screen. I clicked on it to move it up so I could look at it, and the next thing I knew I got an alert popped up on the screen from my Norton AntiVirus program, saying that there had been an attempt to download Nimda onto my computer. It asked me if I wanted to quarantine the file, and I clicked "yes."
I've since deleted the file, after doing some research on Nimda (Symantec has some really good info), and have done two complete virus scans of my computer since. It's clean. I've also searched for the files in case they were squirreled away somewhere, but they're not on my computer. The quarantine worked. But this is the first time I've ever been "attacked" by an infected web site. It was an eye-opening experience. Nimda is a nasty virus. It duplicates itself all over your computer, scrambles and deletes files at random, and sends itself to everyone in your email address book. As far as I'm concerned, Norton AntiVirus paid for itself right then.

I hear ya Fan! Not to long ago I got the lovebug virus. Luckily Nortan caught it then I got a file form work to run that destroyed it.

I did it, lovely people. I bought a car. I got a 1997 Ford Taurus (65,000 miles) that has been a company car for a customer service guy for the past 4 years. Since the alternative to selling it to an employee is sending it to auction, I got it for the projected auction or wholesale price. I think I just figured out the only way to buy a car without helping the economy - all I really did was prevent it from going through the middlemen who could profit from it.
Works OK for me.
The former driver couldn't have been more helpful. He brought it over here for me to test drive. He brought it to a mechanic he trusts (I don't know any out here) for an inspection. He showed me under the hood. And he just made me trust that he was a person who hasn't been mistreating the car even though the transmission had to be totally rebuilt at 58,000 miles.
I am a bit nervous, but I do need a car. Right now it takes me at least an hour to get in to work in the morning and an hour and a quarter to go home. And that is only if things are working perfectly. It can be a whole heck of a lot longer. This morning was 1 1/2 hours in (slow signals because of police stuff going on at Linden station - we don't even stop at Linden).
Anyway, I'm just waiting for the papers and my insurance card to arrive so I can register it and then go pick it up at Knud's house. Probably will happen on the weekend of the 10th of November - in plenty of time for me to drive to Vermont for Thanksgiving instead of having to deal with the nightmare of dealing with security at Newark Airport.

<font face="georgia">Well, Polly, it's a good choice as far as cars go. Lots of them have been sold in this country, so if any parts are needed down the road, there should be plenty. Remember to get theft insurance for it as well, as IIRC, it comes in second to Toyotas as being a popular target for theft. Or, get "The Club". I do know that they've had transmission problems in general, so having it replaced less than 10k miles ago is a good sign. Just keep in mind it may be a 50k mile thing...maybe a search on google for Taurus Transmission discussions might be in order. Sorry about bringing up the negative things, but just so you know.

Automatically get to use HOV lanes during carpool-only hours, and no bridge tolls. As a semi-touring bike, it has a fairing and windshield so there's little wind hitting you. Oh, yeah...heated handgrips, too. Keeps my hands toasty on the low setting. Downside? You need to spend some money on protective clothing, and it needs to be warm on cold days and cool on warm days. A few people driving cars never seem to see you, but you learn to predict. Plus...You don't have to talk on a cell phone! You tell people that during your commute, you are absolutely unavailable, and tell them why. No argument there...Finally, think about seeing a female lawyer getting off of a motorcycle. Definately not one anyone will mess with in a court room or deposition.
So, why are all of your close friends throwing rotten vegetables at me???

Wizz, heated handgrips? Jeez, that would have been nice years ago when I was riding to work on those cold mornings. Technology is a wonderful thing.

Re: getting the Club... a professional car thief just cuts the steering wheel, twists it, and slides the Club off. Takes 'em about 15 seconds to get it out of the way. It will deter amateurs only.
Is car theft a problem at your garage? Are the attendants on duty 24/7? I don't suppose the property management company will want to advertise any thefts, but do you have a right to know, if you park there, just what the risk might be?
My main question is this: When may I expect you to come knocking at my door?

My father in law actually wears a heated jacket on his bike. And he mounted a CD player on the thing as well.
Let's see, I ride my motorcycle whenever possible no matter how cold it is as long as it isn't snowing. I wear heated electrical clothing consisting of a jacket liner, pants, gloves, and socks. You can call me a whimp, but at least I'm nice and warm!
